Traditional Thai Yoga Massage is an ancient healing art, handed down from teacher to pupil since the third century BC. Originating in India and strongly linked to Buddhism, Thai Yoga Massage is always practised in a meditative mood. It is said to be “the physical application of loving kindness”.
Thai Yoga Massage is traditionally performed on the floor — you lie on a padded mat, but no lotions or oils are applied, and you remain fully clothed for the session.
Our therapist at Healthy Harmony follows the traditional method using the body’s energy line system—the Ten Sen—through which the body’s natural life force flows, applying traditional massage techniques, such as acupressure, compression and joint mobilisation – guiding the client through partner yoga poses and manipulates the body into stretches releasing blocked energy and freeing the body’s healing potential, restoring balance and harmony.
Contrary to popular preconceptions, Thai Yoga Massage does not require practitioner or receiver to be flexible, athletic or strong. Each treatment is designed to suit client needs. As the basic principle is to balance the energy body with palming and thumbing techniques, this form of bodywork can be done on anyone!
Thai Yoga Massage works off the belief that tightened muscles lead to the diminished flow of energy in your body. When energy can’t flow freely, you become inflexible, suffer pain and feel stiff. Over time, this leads to shortened muscles and connective tissue that affects your posture, immunity and organ function — all of which speed up ageing and disability.
The wonderful yoga-based stretches are secondary and do not need to be integral to the treatment. However, for those able to receive them, these effective and beautiful stretches really enhance the experience and benefits. Adding stretching to the massage process helps relax the muscles further, so they naturally regain natural flexibility and tone.
The pressing techniques used in Thai massage are designed to increase blood circulation to facilitate the better flow of oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. It also helps your body naturally get rid of waste, such as metabolic by-products and carbon dioxide, more efficiently
